crank no start 01 cavalier

Hi,

I have 2001 chevy cavalier with a 2.2L with 147,000 that cranks but won't start. Person claims they thought it had run out of gas so they added a couple of gallons and tried to restart it to no availe.I towed the car back to my place and did my normal routine on checking everything and found worn plugs and bad plug wires so I replaced them. tried to restart car it fired ran for a short while and died, did this a couple more times same results. I have spark and can hear the fuel pump kick in but car only fires intermittently now but refuses to start and run.my only thought at this time is maybe a bad crank sensor but that doesn't explain why I still have spark and fuel. I am now at a loss. I have gone over everything again. spark is consistent and fuel pump runs everytime key is cycled. I am thinking its either a crank sensor or bad ignition module.

Please help.
